Charter of the Alpha Delta Chapter of Pi Delta Sigma (ΠΔΣ)

Preamble

We, the members of the Alpha Delta Chapter of Pi Delta Sigma at Missouri Valley College, guided by the Latin motto “Atramentum et Sanguis” (“Ink and Blood”), hereby establish this charter. Our commitment is to promote the principles of traditional journalism among collegiate journalism students, adhering to the values of accuracy, objectivity, fairness, independence, accountability, public interest, transparency, and confidentiality.

Article I: Name and Emblem

Name

  • The name of this organization shall be the Alpha Delta Chapter of Pi Delta Sigma (ΠΔΣ), embodying the spirit of excellence in journalism and steadfast commitment to the core values of truth, integrity, and ethical reporting within the collegiate community at Missouri Valley College.

Emblem

  • The emblem of the Alpha Delta Chapter of Pi Delta Sigma shall be an ornate quill crossed with a sword, set against a backdrop of flourishing scrolls and intricate filigree. The quill, a traditional symbol of writing and communication, represents the pursuit of truth through the written word. The sword signifies the defense of these truths with courage and strength. 

Article II: Mission

The mission of the Alpha Delta Chapter is to foster excellence in journalism by nurturing skills, ethics, and integrity among its members, encouraging them to strive for truth, justice, and accountability in all journalistic endeavors.

Article III: Values

  • Accuracy: We commit to precise and verified reporting, correcting errors promptly.
  • Objectivity: We strive for impartial reporting, minimizing biases and presenting all sides of a story.
  • Fairness: We treat all subjects with fairness and respect, without discrimination.
  • Independence: We maintain independence from those we cover, our employers, and external influences.
  • Accountability: We are accountable to the public, explaining our methods and responding to criticism.
  • Public Interest: We focus on issues important to the public, enabling informed decisions.
  • Transparency: We are transparent about our sources and methods, protecting source confidentiality.
  • Confidentiality: We protect the identities of sources who may be harmed by disclosure.

Article IV: Membership

  • Eligibility: Membership is open to all Missouri Valley College students who are committed to the principles of Pi Delta Sigma.
  • Responsibilities: Members must actively participate in campus media, attend chapter activities and uphold the values and mission of the society.
  • Rights: All members have the right to voice their opinions, vote on society matters, and stand for office.

Article V: Governance

  • Officers: The chapter shall elect a President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and other officers as needed.
  • Elections: Officers will be elected annually by a majority vote of the chapter’s active members.
  • Duties:
    • President: Leads the chapter and represents it at all events and meetings.
    • Vice President: Assists the President and assumes their duties in their absence.
    • Secretary: Manages records, minutes, and correspondence.
    • Treasurer: Oversees financial matters and budgeting.

Article VI: Meetings

  • Regular meetings shall be held monthly.
  • Special meetings may be called by the President or a majority of the members.

Article VII: Amendments

This charter may be amended by a two-thirds vote of the active members, provided that the amendment has been proposed at least one month prior to the vote.

Article VIII: Ratification

This charter shall be considered ratified and in effect upon the signature of at least two-thirds of the founding members and approval from the national office of Pi Delta Sigma.

This charter establishes the Alpha Delta Chapter as a body dedicated to upholding the highest standards of journalistic integrity and education, aspiring to influence the field of journalism positively through the professional and ethical growth of its members.
