Marshall, Missouri — March 14, 2026 — Pi Delta Sigma, the national honor society dedicated to the advancement of ethical journalism and the defense of press freedom, strongly condemns recent statements by Brendan Carr suggesting that broadcasters could lose their licenses over their coverage of the war involving Iran.
According to multiple news reports, Carr warned that broadcasters airing what he called “hoaxes” or “news distortions” about the conflict could face the loss of their broadcast licenses if they fail to “correct course.”
Pi Delta Sigma believes such statements represent a deeply troubling attempt to pressure journalists and news organizations through the regulatory authority of the federal government.
The power to license broadcasters must never become a tool to intimidate the press. The First Amendment exists precisely to prevent government officials from punishing news organizations for reporting facts that may be politically inconvenient.
Broadcast licenses are issued by the Federal Communications Commission to ensure that stations serve the public interest. However, long-standing interpretations of the law make clear that the government may not use this authority to dictate editorial decisions or compel favorable coverage of government policy.
Press freedom advocates and lawmakers across the political spectrum have expressed concern that threats of license revocation over news coverage could undermine the independence of the American press.
Pi Delta Sigma affirms the following principles:
- Journalists must remain free to report on matters of war, national security, and government policy without intimidation.
- Regulatory agencies must not use licensing authority to influence editorial content.
- A free press is essential to democratic accountability, particularly during times of conflict.
At moments when the stakes are highest, the public needs independent reporting the most. Threatening broadcasters with the loss of their licenses simply for covering a war sets a dangerous precedent for the future of American journalism.
Pi Delta Sigma calls upon leaders in government, media, and civil society to reaffirm the fundamental role of the First Amendment and to reject any effort to use federal authority to pressure journalists or news organizations.
